Halfords is one of the UK’s largest retailers for motoring and cycling, and many households have more than one active relationship with the business at any given time: a Motoring Club subscription, a pre-paid Autocentre MOT or service booking, a CycleCare plan for a bike, a Cycle2Work salary sacrifice arrangement, or unspent gift cards. These are separate products, handled by different teams, and each requires its own notification.
Unlike banks or utilities, Halfords has no dedicated bereavement team and no published bereavement page. The route for all notifications is through the main customer service line, where you explain you are contacting them following a death. This is manageable, but it does mean you may need to make separate calls for different products.

How to notify Halfords
Halfords does not publish a dedicated bereavement page or a separate bereavement telephone number. The main customer service line handles all enquiries, including those relating to a deceased customer’s account.
By phone: Call 0330 135 9779. When connected, explain that you are contacting them following the death of an account holder. Ask for the account to be noted as belonging to a deceased person and request cancellation of any active subscriptions or bookings. If the deceased held a Motoring Club membership, select option 1 at the start of the call to reach the Motoring Club support team.
By live chat: Halfords offers live chat through the speech bubble icon on their website at halfords.com, available daily from 8am to 8pm. This can be useful for initial queries, but phone is usually more reliable for sensitive matters requiring account access.
What to have ready: The deceased’s full name, date of birth, and usual address; their Halfords account email address if known; any relevant membership, booking, or order reference numbers; your own name and relationship to the deceased (executor, next of kin, or administrator).
What Halfords will do: On notification, Halfords will flag the account and can cancel active subscriptions. They may ask you to provide confirmation in writing for some products. There is no formal bereavement portal, so keep a note of the date you called, the name of the adviser, and any reference number given.

Halfords Motoring Club
The Halfords Motoring Club is Halfords’ subscription membership scheme, available in a free tier and a paid Premium tier.
Free membership gives access to basic discounts and a £5 discount on an MOT.
Premium membership costs £5.49 per month (£65.88 billed annually) or £54 per year when paid upfront. It includes a free MOT each year, two 10-point vehicle health checks, a free fitting service for bulbs, wiper blades, or a battery, a £10 welcome voucher, and 5% off motoring products across stores, garages, and online.
How to cancel a deceased member’s Motoring Club subscription
Call 0330 135 9779 and select option 1 to reach the Motoring Club support team. Lines are open Monday to Saturday 8am to 8pm; Sunday is closed. You can also use the live chat via the account dashboard if you have access to the deceased’s login details, though phone is the more straightforward route in bereavement.
When you call, explain that the account holder has died and that you wish to cancel the membership. Ask whether a pro-rata refund is available for any unused period of a paid annual subscription.
Motoring Club terms and the 12-month minimum
The Motoring Club standard terms include a 12-month minimum commitment. Outside the 14-day cooling-off period, members cannot normally cancel mid-term and are bound until the end of the initial year. However, these terms are designed for active members choosing to leave, not for bereavement situations. When notifying Halfords of a death, ask the team directly what their policy is for pro-rata refunds in bereavement. Halfords has discretion to cancel and refund outside the standard terms in exceptional circumstances.
If you are told a refund is not possible due to the minimum term, note the date and the adviser’s name, then escalate via the formal complaints process. Halfords’ terms cannot override the estate’s entitlement to a remedy where the member has died and the service can no longer be used. If the subscription was paid annually in advance, the estate has a reasonable basis to pursue a pro-rata refund.
Monthly versus annual payments
If the membership was paid monthly by direct debit, do not cancel the direct debit through the bank before Halfords has confirmed cancellation. Cancel the direct debit through the bank only after receiving written confirmation from Halfords that the membership has been closed – this avoids payment disputes and ensures the cancellation is properly recorded.
If the membership was paid annually upfront, ask Halfords to calculate any refund due from the date of death.

Halfords Autocentre: active MOT and service bookings
Halfords Autocentre operates as a distinct division from Halfords retail. It runs a national network of garages offering MOTs, car servicing, tyres, and repairs. If the deceased had an upcoming MOT or service appointment booked at an Autocentre, that booking will need to be cancelled.
Cancelling or transferring an Autocentre booking
Bookings made online can be cancelled through the Track My Order tool on the Halfords website. You will need the booking reference and the email address used when the booking was made.
Alternatively, call the main customer service number 0330 135 9779 (Autocentre lines are open Monday to Friday 8am–6pm, Saturday 8am–4:30pm; closed Sunday) and explain you need to cancel a booking due to the death of the account holder.
Halfords’ policy is to process cancellation refunds within 3–5 working days, paid back to the original payment method.
What about the MOT included in Motoring Club Premium?
If the deceased held a Motoring Club Premium membership, the annual MOT is one of its core benefits. The MOT is tied to the membership, not to a specific vehicle. When you cancel the Motoring Club subscription, the included MOT benefit ends with it. There is nothing to separately “cancel” for the MOT – it is part of the membership package.
Halfords Autocentre versus Halfords retail
It is worth knowing that Halfords retail (the shops and online store) and Halfords Autocentre are managed as separate divisions. For practical purposes, this matters because if you are managing multiple Halfords relationships, you may be routed to different teams even when calling the same main number. When you call, be clear about what you are enquiring about – retail account, Motoring Club membership, or an Autocentre booking – so the call is directed correctly.

Gift cards
Halfords gift cards function as bearer instruments: they are redeemable by whoever holds the card, with no registration to the cardholder’s name. This makes them simpler to handle in an estate context than account-based products.
If the deceased had one or more Halfords gift cards, the estate can use the remaining balance in the same way the deceased would have – by presenting the card at a Halfords store or using the card number online. You do not need to notify Halfords of the death to redeem a gift card.
Key terms to be aware of
| Term | Detail |
|---|---|
| Cash refund | Not available – gift cards cannot be exchanged for cash |
| Expiry | 24 months after the last use or balance enquiry |
| FSCS protection | Not covered – funds on gift cards are not protected |
| Balance check | Check online at halfords.com or call 0371 384 3198 |
| Responsibility for fraud | Halfords and Voucher Express are not liable for unauthorised use |
The 24-month expiry rule matters. If the estate administration is likely to run for more than two years, make a note of any gift card balance enquiry or use it within that period to reset the expiry clock. Alternatively, use the balance on products for the estate (car tax, vehicle maintenance) or redeem it as part of winding up.
Gift cards cannot be converted to cash. If the estate requires cash and gift cards are all that remain, the practical approach is to use the balance on useful purchases and reduce expenditure in that category rather than pursuing a cash redemption – Halfords’ published terms do not provide for this.

Cycle2Work: the salary sacrifice complication
Cycle2Work is a government-backed salary sacrifice scheme that allows employees to hire a bicycle through their employer and pay for it from pre-tax salary, reducing income tax and National Insurance contributions. Halfords is one of the largest Cycle2Work scheme providers in the UK.
If the deceased was participating in a Cycle2Work scheme through their employer and the hire period was still running at the time of their death, the situation is more complicated than a standard Halfords account, and the resolution sits primarily with the employer, not with Halfords directly.
Who owns the bike?
During the salary sacrifice hire period, the bike remains the property of Halfords, not the employee. Ownership transfers to the employee only at the end of the hire term, typically after 12 months, via a separate transfer-of-ownership process (usually involving a payment of the bike’s fair market value based on HMRC’s valuation matrix).
This means that if the deceased died during the hire period, the bike was not legally theirs at the time of death, and it does not automatically form part of the estate.
What happens to the remaining payments?
When an employee leaves employment – including through death – the remaining hire balance is typically deducted as a net (post-tax) payment from the final payslip. Because the salary sacrifice element ends with employment, the remaining payments revert to the gross cost without tax relief.
The executor or next of kin should contact the deceased’s employer (not Halfords) as the first step. The employer administers the salary sacrifice arrangement and manages the cessation process. The employer will in turn liaise with Halfords to resolve what happens to the bike and any remaining balance.
Contacting Halfords about a Cycle2Work arrangement
If there is no employer to contact (for example, if the deceased was a sole trader running a company scheme, or if the employer is unresponsive), contact Halfords Cycle2Work directly:

CycleCare plans
Halfords CycleCare is a subscription service plan for bikes, covering regular servicing, maintenance, and puncture repairs. Plans range from Classic to Premium and cover one or three years.
If the deceased held a CycleCare plan, it is a personal subscription that ends on their death. Halfords’ terms include a 14-day cooling-off period with a full refund available, and a cancellation right for permanent physical disability with 30 days’ written notice. Death is not explicitly addressed in the published terms, but the same principle applies: the plan is personal and cannot be used by anyone other than the account holder.
To cancel a CycleCare plan after a death, call 0330 135 9779 and ask the customer service team to close the plan with a pro-rata refund from the date of death. If the plan was paid annually in advance, pursue a refund for the unused months. If the plan was monthly, cancel after Halfords confirms closure, not before.

Tips and things to watch out for
Check bank statements for multiple Halfords direct debits. The Motoring Club and a CycleCare plan are billed separately and may appear under different merchant names. Search the deceased’s bank statements for “Halfords”, “Halfords Motoring Club”, or “CycleCare” to catch all active subscriptions before they renew.
Watch auto-renewal dates. Both Motoring Club and CycleCare plans renew automatically. If a death occurs close to a renewal date, notify Halfords before the renewal processes – otherwise a new annual or monthly charge may be applied to an account that should have been closed.
Do not cancel direct debits before Halfords confirms closure. Cancelling a direct debit through your bank before Halfords has formally closed the account can cause payment disputes and leave the account in a confused administrative state. Always wait for written confirmation of closure from Halfords before contacting the bank.
The Cycle2Work bike may not form part of the estate. If the deceased had not completed their hire term, the bike legally belonged to Halfords at the time of death. Do not assume it can be sold or distributed as estate property without first confirming the ownership position with the deceased’s employer.
There is no single “Halfords bereavement team”. Unlike banks and utilities, Halfords is a retailer without a dedicated bereavement notification service. Each product (Motoring Club, Autocentre, Cycle2Work, CycleCare) is a separate conversation. Keep a log of each call: date, time, adviser name, reference number, and what was agreed.
Escalate if refund requests are refused unreasonably. Halfords’ standard terms restrict cancellation to certain windows, but these terms are written for ordinary circumstances. Where a member has died and the service can no longer be used, the estate has a reasonable basis to pursue a refund. If Halfords refuses, raise a formal complaint through their published complaints process before considering other routes.

Summary
Halfords does not have a dedicated bereavement service, but all notifications can be handled through the main customer service line on 0330 135 9779. For Motoring Club, select option 1. For Cycle2Work, contact cycle2.work@halfords.co.uk or call 0345 504 6444.
The most time-sensitive actions are stopping any monthly direct debits (but only after Halfords confirms closure) and cancelling any upcoming Autocentre bookings before the appointment date. Gift cards can be used at any point within 24 months of the last transaction – there is no rush, but do not let them lapse.
The Cycle2Work arrangement is the most complex element. If the deceased was still in a hire period, the bike is not estate property, and the resolution sits with the employer. Raise it with the employer’s HR or payroll team first.
If the deceased held breakdown cover through a third-party partner add-on via Halfords, this will be administered by the breakdown provider directly. See our guides to notifying the AA after a bereavement, notifying the RAC after a bereavement, and notifying Green Flag after a bereavement for those processes. If the deceased held a Halfords-arranged insurance product, check the policy documents to identify the underlying insurer and notify them separately.
For a complete overview of all the organisations you may need to notify – banks, insurers, utilities, government departments, and retailers – see our complete guide to notifying companies after a death.
