How to notify the AA when someone dies

Last updated 22 May 2026

The AA is one of the UK’s most widely held membership organisations, with around 17 million members covered through breakdown services, car and home insurance, travel insurance, driving tuition, and financial services. If the person you’ve lost was an AA member or policyholder, there may be more than one account to deal with – breakdown cover, insurance policies, and financial products are each administered through different parts of the AA business, and each requires its own notification.

This guide explains who to contact, what documents you’ll need, and what happens to each type of AA product when a member dies. The AA has a dedicated bereavement process and will work at whatever pace suits you.

If you’re managing notifications to multiple organisations at the same time, our guide to notifying companies after a death covers banks, utilities, government departments, and other insurers.

Quick reference:

  • Online bereavement form: theaa.com/help-support/report-a-bereavement
  • Breakdown cover and membership: 0343 316 4444 (Mon–Fri 8am–7pm, Sat 9am–5pm)
  • AA car insurance: 0800 980 6239
  • Financial services – savings (ISA): 0333 220 5069
  • Financial services – savings (non-ISA): 0345 266 0001

How to notify the AA

The AA’s primary bereavement route is an online form at theaa.com/help-support/report-a-bereavement. You do not need to phone first – the form is sufficient to start the process for breakdown cover and insurance policies. The AA’s Personal Support Team will review the notification and contact you within 5 working days to confirm next steps.

To complete the form, you will need:

  • Your email address
  • The deceased’s address
  • Their membership or policy number
  • The date of death

Membership numbers have 16 digits and can be found on the back of the AA membership card. Policy numbers appear on any insurance documents, renewal letters, or bank statement direct debit entries. If you cannot find a number, submit the form anyway – the AA can search their records using the deceased’s name, date of birth, and address.

If you prefer to phone, the breakdown cover and membership team is on 0343 316 4444 (Monday to Friday 8am to 7pm, Saturday 9am to 5pm). For AA car insurance specifically, call 0800 980 6239. For AA Financial Services (savings and ISA accounts), see the AA Financial Services section below.

The AA has also partnered with Life Ledger, a third-party service that lets you notify multiple organisations at once. The AA receives no commission from this arrangement. Life Ledger may charge a fee – using the AA’s own online form directly is free.

What documents you’ll need

The death certificate is the core document for all AA accounts. In England and Wales, death certificates are issued by the register office once a death is formally registered. Order several certified copies at registration – most organisations require either an original or a certified copy, and having multiple on hand avoids delays.

DocumentWhen needed
Death certificate (original or certified copy)Required for all accounts
Membership or policy numberFor each AA product – helpful but not essential for the initial notification
Your proof of identityIf acting as executor or administrator
Grant of probate or letters of administrationRequired for financial accounts over £30,000
Funeral invoiceIf requesting payment from an AA savings or ISA account to cover funeral costs

For breakdown cover and insurance cancellation, probate is not required. The AA’s Personal Support Team will advise if additional documentation is needed for your specific situation.

What happens to breakdown cover

The AA’s breakdown cover – roadside assistance and recovery – is a membership product rather than an insurance policy, though it works similarly for bereavement purposes.

When a member dies, the membership should be cancelled from the date of death. Contact the AA via the online form or by calling 0343 316 4444.

Refunds for unused membership. If the membership was paid annually in advance, the AA will refund the unused portion on a pro-rata basis from the date of death. Ask the AA to confirm this when you notify them – monthly direct debit memberships will simply be stopped.

Personal versus vehicle-based cover. The AA offers two types of breakdown cover:

  • Personal cover – follows the member, covering them in any vehicle. This type is linked to the individual and cannot be transferred to another person.
  • Vehicle-based cover – attached to a specific vehicle. This can, in principle, transfer with the vehicle if the car is passed to a surviving family member. Confirm the specifics with the AA when you call.

Joint and family membership. If the deceased held a Joint membership (covering two people at the same address) or a Family membership (up to four people), cover for the surviving members does not automatically end. Contact the AA to restructure the membership in the surviving member’s name. The premium may be recalculated. If the deceased was the lead member, the AA will advise on how to transfer the primary account holder.

Don’t cancel the direct debit before contacting the AA. Cancel the direct debit through the bank only after the AA has confirmed the membership has been formally closed. Cancelling the direct debit first can complicate the refund process.

What happens to AA car insurance

AA car insurance is sold and administered separately from breakdown cover. If the deceased held an AA car insurance policy, the process runs in parallel to – but independently of – the breakdown cover notification.

AA is a broker, not always the underwriter. When you take out car insurance through the AA, they act as the arranger and administrator of the policy, with the actual risk underwritten by a separate insurer. This distinction matters for bereavement: the AA’s team handles the cancellation directly, but any outstanding claims may involve the underlying insurer. In practice, this does not complicate the cancellation process – just be aware that correspondence about settled or open claims may come from a different company name.

Call 0800 980 6239 to notify the AA car insurance team. Alternatively, use the bereavement form at theaa.com/help-support/report-a-bereavement – you can notify both breakdown cover and insurance in one submission.

Do not drive the car before confirming cover. A car insurance policy is personal to the named policyholder. Once the policyholder dies, the legal position of any other driver – including a named driver on the policy – is not straightforward. Before anyone moves or drives the deceased’s vehicle, contact the AA to confirm whether cover remains in place. Driving an uninsured vehicle is a criminal offence. For more on this, see our guide to what happens to car insurance when someone dies.

Cancellation and refund. The AA will cancel the policy from the date of death and calculate a pro-rata refund of any unused annual premium. Most insurers waive the standard cancellation fee in bereavement circumstances – ask the AA to confirm this when you call.

Joint policies. If the policy was held jointly – both the deceased and a surviving partner named on the same policy – the death of one policyholder does not automatically void cover for the surviving driver. Contact the AA to remove the deceased from the policy and continue it in the surviving partner’s name. The premium may be recalculated.

No-claims discount. The deceased’s no-claims history was personal to them. It cannot formally be transferred to another person’s policy, but if a surviving spouse is setting up their own car insurance, some insurers show flexibility in bereavement circumstances – it is worth asking.

For information on the vehicle itself – DVLA registration, vehicle excise duty, selling or transferring the car – see our guide to what happens to a car when someone dies.

AA Financial Services

AA Financial Services offers savings accounts and ISAs, administered through a partnership with National Westminster Bank plc (trading as NatWest Boxed). Note that the current provider arrangement depends on when the account was opened:

  • Accounts opened from April 2025 onwards – managed through NatWest Boxed
  • Accounts opened between December 2023 and April 2025 – previously provided by Bank of Ireland UK; contact AA Financial Services to confirm which team handles these
  • Older accounts – may still be held with Bank of Ireland UK

To notify AA Financial Services of a death:

  • Savings accounts (ISA): 0333 220 5069
  • Savings accounts (non-ISA): 0345 266 0001

You can also use the AA Financial Services bereavement page at theaa.com/finance/bereavement.

What documentation is needed for financial accounts:

For accounts with a balance under £30,000, AA Financial Services will typically require a certified death certificate, identity proof from the person dealing with the estate, and a signed indemnity or payment authorisation form.

For accounts over £30,000, a grant of probate (where there is a valid will) or letters of administration (where there is no will) will usually be required before funds are released. Source: The AA – financial services bereavement, verified May 2026.

Joint accounts. Funds in a joint account transfer automatically to the surviving account holder.

Funeral expenses. If the account held savings earmarked for funeral expenses, the AA Financial Services team may release funds to a funeral director directly, on production of a certified death certificate and a funeral invoice, before probate has been granted.

For a broader overview of what happens to savings accounts after a death, see our guide to savings accounts and bereavement.

Other AA products

Home insurance

If the deceased held AA home insurance, contact the AA via the bereavement form or by phone. The AA will confirm the current policy status and discuss options.

One issue to address promptly is the unoccupied property exclusion. Standard home insurance – including the AA’s – typically restricts or removes cover once a property has been empty for a set consecutive period, commonly 30 to 60 days. If the deceased’s home will be unoccupied during estate administration and probate, ask the AA whether the policy can be extended, or whether you need to arrange specialist unoccupied property insurance before the threshold passes. Probate in England and Wales typically takes several months – gov.uk/applying-for-probate – which often runs beyond a 30- or 60-day limit.

For the full picture on home insurance after a death, see our guide to what happens to home insurance when someone dies.

Travel insurance

If the deceased held an AA travel insurance policy, contact the AA to cancel it. For an annual multi-trip policy, ask about a pro-rata refund of any unused premium.

If a trip was booked but is now not going ahead because of the death, check the policy for a cancellation benefit. Many annual travel policies include cancellation cover for bereavement.

AA Driving School

Driving lessons booked through AA Driving School are contracted directly with the individual driving instructor. If the deceased had pre-paid lessons that have not been taken, contact AA Driving School to discuss a refund for the unused portion. Details at theaa.com/driving-school.

AA loans

If the deceased held a personal loan through AA Financial Services, call the financial services team. For loans arranged through the older Bank of Ireland UK partnership, contact the relevant team via theaa.com/finance/bereavement to establish who holds the debt and what the estate’s obligations are. Any outstanding loan balance is a debt of the estate – it does not pass automatically to a surviving spouse or family member unless they were a joint borrower.

AA Smart Charge (roadside EV assistance)

The AA’s Smart Charge refers to their mobile electric vehicle charging capability deployed by patrol vehicles – it is a roadside rescue tool used by AA patrols to provide emergency charge to stranded electric vehicles. It is not a consumer subscription product, so there is nothing to cancel as part of estate administration.

If the deceased leased an electric vehicle through the AA, see the AA leasing section of their website for relevant contact details.

How long does it take?

TaskTypical timeline
Initial acknowledgement from AA Personal Support TeamWithin 5 working days of online notification
Breakdown cover cancellation confirmedPromptly on notification
Car insurance cancellation confirmedPromptly on notification
Pro-rata premium refunds1–2 weeks after documentation received
Written confirmation of cancellationSent by post or email after notification
Financial account closure (under £30,000)Typically 2–4 weeks once documentation received
Financial account closure (over £30,000)Requires probate – may take several months

The main cause of delay is missing documentation – particularly if the membership or policy number cannot be found. If this happens, the AA can search their records using the deceased’s name, date of birth, and address. Call the relevant team rather than waiting.

Things to watch out for

Use the online form to start, but follow up by phone if needed. The AA’s bereavement form sends your notification to their Personal Support Team. If you don’t hear back within 5 working days, call 0343 316 4444 and ask for an update.

Check bank statements for all active AA products. People often hold more AA products than they realise – breakdown cover and insurance may each appear as separate direct debits. Search the deceased’s bank statements for “AA”, “The Automobile Association”, or “AA Insurance” entries, as well as “NatWest Boxed” or “Bank of Ireland” for any financial services accounts.

Cancel direct debits through the AA first. Do not cancel AA direct debits through the bank until you’ve confirmed cancellation with the AA. Cancelling the direct debit first can complicate the refund calculation and, for insurance, may technically lapse the policy before formal cancellation is recorded.

Auto-renewal. AA policies auto-renew annually. If the death occurs close to a renewal date, notify the AA before the renewal is processed – otherwise a new annual premium may be charged for a policy that should have been cancelled.

Joint membership and cover. If the deceased held a Joint or Family breakdown membership, cover for surviving members does not automatically end. Contact the AA to transfer the primary membership into the surviving member’s name. The sooner this is done, the less risk there is of cover lapsing during the changeover.

Home insurance unoccupancy. Standard home insurance – including the AA’s – restricts or removes cover once a property has been empty for a consecutive period. If the property will be empty during probate, act before that threshold passes or arrange specialist probate house insurance.

Probate is not required to cancel breakdown cover or insurance. You can notify the AA and cancel policies without a grant of probate. Probate becomes relevant for financial products where the balance exceeds £30,000, but it is not a prerequisite for the initial notification.
