MoreThan bereavement: no phone line, use the form – here's why that matters

Last updated 7 July 2026

MoreThan is part of Admiral Group, offering car, home, pet and landlord insurance across the UK. If the person you’ve lost held a MoreThan policy, this guide explains how to notify them, what documents you’ll need, and what happens to each type of cover.

MoreThan’s main route for a bereavement is a dedicated online form rather than a single phone line. This guide walks through that form, the product-specific phone numbers if you’d rather speak to someone, and what to expect for car, home, pet and landlord policies.

If you need to notify several organisations at once, our guide to notifying companies after a death covers banks, utilities, government departments and other insurers.

How to notify MoreThan of a death

MoreThan’s primary bereavement route is an online form, found via the Additional Support and Assistance page. The form asks for the policy number, the deceased’s name and date of birth, whether the death resulted from a road traffic accident, details of any other Admiral Group policies held, your intentions for the insured car, home or other asset, your contact details and preferred contact method, and your relationship to the deceased.

MoreThan states it will write to the contact details you provide once the form is submitted, unless a call-back is needed. There’s no dedicated bereavement phone line quoted alongside the form – if you’d rather talk to someone first, the relevant product line below will get you through to a person who can log the bereavement and start the process.

What documents you’ll need

Have the following ready, though MoreThan’s form doesn’t require everything up front – a scan or photograph of the death certificate is accepted for the initial notification.

DocumentNotes
Death certificate (original, certified copy, or interim certificate)Accepted as a scan or photograph initially; may be asked for an original or certified copy later
Policy number(s)Check the policy schedule, renewal notice, or bank statement for “MoreThan” direct debits
Full name, date of birth and usual address of the deceasedFor account identification
Date of deathRequired for the form
Your name, relationship to the deceased and contact detailsAs next of kin, executor or administrator
Proof of your identityMay be requested if you’re claiming a refund or acting on the estate’s behalf

If you can’t find the policy number, MoreThan can usually locate the account from the deceased’s name, date of birth and address. Checking bank statements for a MoreThan, or wider Admiral Group, direct debit is the fastest way to confirm which products were held.

What happens to the account

MoreThan’s insurance products are personal contracts – they do not automatically continue after the policyholder dies. Once notified, cover is either cancelled or restructured depending on the policy type.

Car insurance

Car cover does not transfer automatically. Do not drive the vehicle until MoreThan has confirmed the current cover position. Even a named driver who used the car regularly may no longer be insured once the main policyholder has died – that cover was tied to the deceased’s contract. Driving without valid insurance is a criminal offence with penalties including fines, points, and vehicle seizure. (Source: gov.uk – motor insurance penalties)

If you need to move the car before the insurance position is confirmed, arrange short-term cover from a specialist provider such as Cuvva or Tempcover – available from as little as one hour. For the full picture on named drivers, grace periods, refunds and joint policies, see what happens to car insurance when someone dies.

Home insurance

Home insurance – buildings and contents – needs prompt attention, especially if the property will stand empty during probate. Ask MoreThan directly: “Is the property currently insured, and until when?”

Most standard UK home insurance policies restrict cover for an unoccupied property after a set number of consecutive days (commonly 30 to 60, depending on the insurer) – after which claims for damage may not be paid. Since probate typically takes several months (around 16 weeks for a straightforward estate in England and Wales – see gov.uk: applying for probate), this limit often passes before the estate is settled. Ask MoreThan to confirm their specific unoccupied-property limit and whether it can be extended, or arrange specialist unoccupied-property cover before the threshold is reached. For the full detail on this risk and how to arrange interim cover, see what happens to home insurance when someone dies.

Pet insurance

If the deceased held a MoreThan pet policy and the pet is being rehomed within the family, contact MoreThan to update the policyholder details – cover does not automatically transfer, and a new policy in the new owner’s name may be required. If the pet is not being kept, the policy can be cancelled and any unused premium refunded on a pro-rata basis.

Landlord insurance

MoreThan’s bereavement process also covers landlord policies. If the deceased was a landlord with a MoreThan buildings or contents policy on a rented property, notify MoreThan promptly – an empty rental property (once tenants have vacated, or if it becomes unoccupied during the transfer of the estate) is subject to the same unoccupied-property restrictions as a standard home policy, and rental income cover may also be affected. The executor or administrator will need to confirm ongoing arrangements for the tenancy and the insurance in parallel.

Joint policies

If a policy was held jointly – for example, a couple’s home insurance, or a car policy with two named policyholders – the death of one does not automatically end cover for the survivor. Notify MoreThan so the policy can be updated into the surviving policyholder’s name, though the premium may be recalculated.

Refunds

When a policy is cancelled following a death, MoreThan – like most UK insurers – refunds the unused portion of the premium on a pro-rata basis, typically within 10 to 15 working days of the cancellation being processed and documentation received. Ask whether the standard cancellation fee is waived for bereavement; most insurers do waive it, and this is consistent with the FCA’s Consumer Duty expectations for vulnerable customers.

Probate and thresholds

MoreThan does not publish a specific probate threshold for accessing or cancelling a policy – notifying an insurer of a death and requesting cancellation is an administrative step, not one that requires legal authority over the estate. You do not need a grant of probate or letters of administration simply to tell MoreThan about the death and start the cancellation process.

Probate may become relevant later if there is an outstanding claim of significant value that needs settling as part of the estate, or if the estate needs the refund paid into an estate account rather than a personal one. For guidance on when probate is actually required, see do I need probate?

How long does it take?

TaskTypical timeline
Bereavement form processedA few working days
Cover status confirmedOn contact, once the form or call is received
Pro-rata premium refundTypically 10–15 working days after documentation received
Written confirmation of cancellationSent to the contact details provided on the form

The main cause of delay is missing information – particularly the policy number and death certificate. If you can supply both at first contact, the process moves faster.

Tips and things to watch out for

Use the online form as your first step. MoreThan’s bereavement process is built around the online form rather than a single dedicated bereavement phone line. If you’d prefer to speak to someone, the product-specific numbers above (home, pet) will connect you to a person who can log the death and advise on next steps – but the form is the route MoreThan itself directs bereaved customers to.

Don’t cancel the direct debit before notifying MoreThan. If you cancel the direct debit first, it can create confusion about when cover actually lapsed, which may complicate a refund or an active claim. Notify MoreThan, let them action the cancellation, then confirm the direct debit has stopped.

Check for other Admiral Group policies. MoreThan is part of Admiral Group, which also underwrites Admiral, Bell, Diamond, and Elephant Auto policies. The bereavement form specifically asks about other Admiral Group policies – if the deceased held cover with any of these brands too, mention it at the same time rather than repeating the process separately. See our Admiral bereavement guide for details on those sister brands.

The unoccupied property window is the most commonly missed deadline. If a MoreThan home or landlord policy is in place and the property will be empty during probate, don’t wait until the unoccupied-property limit is close to expiring – ask MoreThan to confirm the exact limit for the policy and act well before it passes.

Keep a record of the reference given after submitting the form. MoreThan’s form doesn’t provide an immediate phone confirmation, so make a note of any reference number or confirmation email you receive, in case you need to follow up.

Summary

To notify MoreThan of a death, use the online bereavement form via morethan.com/additional-support-and-assistance, or call the relevant product line – home insurance on 03303 335 536 (claims) or 03303 335 537 (changes), pet insurance on 0333 7777 388 (claims) or 0333 7777 389 (changes), or general customer services on 0330 100 7823.

Have the death certificate (a scan is fine initially), the policy number if you can find it, and the deceased’s date of birth and address ready. Probate is not required to begin the process. Do not drive an insured vehicle, or assume a home is still covered, until MoreThan has confirmed the position – and if a property will be empty for an extended period, ask about the unoccupied-property limit before it passes.
