JD Sports isn't Sports Direct: separate bereavement contact needed

Last updated 7 July 2026

JD Sports is one of the UK’s largest sports fashion and footwear retailers, with hundreds of stores across the country and a large online customer base. When someone dies, there is no complex savings account to close – but there are several practical tasks to work through: closing the online account, stopping any active subscription, dealing with BNPL payments, checking gift cards, and making sure you have notified the right parts of the JD Group.

That last point catches many families off guard. JD Sports is owned by JD Sports Fashion Plc, which operates a portfolio of separate retail brands. If the deceased shopped across the group, each brand must be notified individually through its own customer service channel. This guide covers JD Sports first, then works through the wider group.

One important clarification before we start: JD Sports and Sports Direct are entirely different, competing companies. Sports Direct is owned by Frasers Group; JD Sports is owned by JD Sports Fashion Plc (majority-owned by Pentland Group). They have different ownership, different customer service, and different processes. If the deceased held accounts with both, each requires a completely separate notification. See our guide to notifying Sports Direct when someone dies.

Quick reference:

  • Customer service phone: 0161 393 7055 (Mon–Fri 08:00–19:00, Sat–Sun 09:00–18:00)
  • No dedicated bereavement team – general customer service handles all estate queries
  • JD Status loyalty scheme: JD Cash is non-transferable and cannot be redeemed for cash; any remaining balance expires on account closure
  • JDX Unlimited subscription: £9.99/year, no longer available to new customers; existing subscriptions should be cancelled
  • BNPL via Klarna and Clearpay: outstanding balances are debts of the estate
  • Gift cards: expire 24 months from purchase; bearer instruments; no cash refund

How to notify JD Sports

JD Sports does not have a dedicated bereavement team or a specialist deceased-customer phone line. All estate-related enquiries are handled through general customer service.

Phone: 0161 393 7055 – the main UK customer service number. Lines are open Monday to Friday 08:00–19:00 and Saturday to Sunday 09:00–18:00. Note that this is a standard 0161 local-rate number, covered by most inclusive mobile minutes. When you call, explain that you are the executor or next of kin, that the account holder has died, and that you wish to close the account and enquire about any outstanding matters. Have the following to hand: the deceased’s full name, date of birth, email address associated with the account, and a copy of the death certificate if possible. (Source: JD Sports – Contact Us, last verified May 2026.)

Online contact form: Available at jdsports.co.uk/customer-service/contact/. Use the contact form for non-urgent matters or where you need to attach documents digitally. Write a clear subject such as “Deceased customer account – estate enquiry” and include the same information you would give on the phone.

Postal address: JD Sports, Hollinsbrook Way, Pilsworth, Bury, Greater Manchester BL9 8RR – for formal correspondence such as letters of administration.

There is no evidence on the JD Sports website of a specialist estate team, a dedicated bereavement line, or a notification form specific to deceased customers. The process is therefore a standard customer service contact: identify yourself, explain the situation, and ask them to close the account. JD Sports will typically ask for a copy of the death certificate and may ask for proof of your authority as executor or next of kin before taking action.

If you need to send a written bereavement request with formal documentation, the corporate contact for JD Sports Fashion Plc – the parent company – is customerchampions@jdplc.com. This may be more suitable for formal estate correspondence than the general retail customer service channel.

Documents you will need

The specific requirements will depend on the size of the estate and whether probate has been granted, but as a general guide you should be prepared to provide:

For account closure:

  • Death certificate – an original or certified copy. JD Sports customer service may ask you to send a scanned copy via the online contact form, or post it to the address above.
  • Proof of your identity as executor or next of kin – a copy of your passport or driving licence is usually sufficient for a retail account.

If the estate is more complex:

  • Grant of probate or letters of administration – required if you need to access account details or recover funds formally, and the company requires evidence of your legal authority to act for the estate. For a straightforward account closure at a retailer, this is often not needed – but JD Sports may request it at their discretion.

For pending orders or refunds:

  • Order numbers – available in confirmation emails or by logging into the account before it is closed.
  • Original payment method details – refunds for returns will be sent to the original payment method.

JD Group brand portfolio

This is the section most families are not prepared for.

JD Sports Fashion Plc operates a range of separate retail brands across sports, outdoor, and fashion. If the deceased held accounts, had pending orders, or held gift cards with any of these brands, each one must be notified through its own customer service channel. Notifying JD Sports does not close or deal with accounts held at any of the group’s other brands.

The main UK brands operating under the JD Sports Fashion Plc group as of 2026:

MilletsOutdoor clothing & kitMore casual, value-focused outdoor
Go OutdoorsOutdoor mega-storeLargest outdoor retailer in the group
TisoScottish outdoor specialistScotland-based; separate CS

(Source: Wikipedia – JD Sports, last verified May 2026.)

Each of these is a separate legal entity with its own website, customer service team, and account system. If the deceased held accounts at Blacks or Go Outdoors, for example, those notifications must be made directly to those brands – calling JD Sports’ customer service line will not close a Blacks or Go Outdoors account.

Size? and Footpatrol are trainers-only specialist brands. They may hold accounts with pending orders, gift cards, or stored payment details. Contact each brand through their own website’s customer service section.

Blacks and Millets share outdoor heritage but serve slightly different customer bases. Both are common with walkers and climbers; if the deceased was an outdoor enthusiast, check whether accounts exist at both.

Go Outdoors is the largest outdoor retailer in the group and operates a Discovery Card – a club discount scheme. If the deceased held a Go Outdoors Discovery Card, this should be cancelled separately.

What happens to the JD Sports account

Online account closure

The deceased’s JD Sports account can be closed by contacting customer service via the phone number or contact form above. You will need to provide the deceased’s name, date of death, and the email address associated with the account.

You do not need the login credentials to request closure – you can contact JD Sports as the executor or next of kin and they will close it on your behalf. Under UK GDPR, you have the right to request information held about the deceased and to request account closure.

Pending and active orders

If the deceased had outstanding orders not yet dispatched, contact JD Sports to cancel them. Refunds will be returned to the original payment method. For orders already dispatched but not received, the estate is not obligated to keep them – contact JD Sports to arrange a return and refund.

If the deceased was using Click & Collect and had items awaiting collection in store, contact customer service with the order number to cancel and obtain a refund.

Stored payment cards

Any payment card details stored in the account present no financial risk once the underlying cards have been cancelled. Account closure removes them from JD Sports’ system. Cancelling the cards with the relevant bank or card provider should be done regardless – see our full what-to-do guide for the banking notification process.

JD Status loyalty points and JDX Unlimited subscription

JD Status

JD Status is JD Sports’ loyalty programme, operated through a smartphone app. Members earn JD Cash – cashback on purchases – which they can spend in-store. New members earn 10% cashback on their first purchase and 1% thereafter; additional promotional boosts are offered periodically.

What happens to JD Cash on death:

JD Cash cannot be redeemed for cash and is explicitly non-transferable. The terms state that “JD STATUS membership and JD Cash is not transferable” – meaning the balance cannot be passed to a family member or claimed by the estate as a monetary asset. If the account is closed, any remaining JD Cash is forfeited. (Source: JD STATUS Terms & Conditions, last verified May 2026.)

JD Cash expiry: Even before account closure, JD Cash expires 180 days after it is earned. If the deceased’s account has been inactive and the most recent balance was earned more than 180 days ago, it will already have expired.

Because JD Cash has no monetary value to the estate, there is no need to make a claim on it. The account should simply be closed as part of the general notification to JD Sports customer service.

JDX Unlimited subscription

JDX Unlimited was JD Sports’ annual delivery subscription, priced at £9.99 per year, offering unlimited free delivery and early access to sale events. It is now closed to new customers and to renewals – but existing subscribers who purchased or last renewed before the closure continue to receive the benefits for the remainder of their 12-month subscription period.

If the deceased held an active JDX Unlimited subscription:

  • The subscription was a one-off annual payment, not a recurring monthly direct debit, so there is no ongoing charge to cancel immediately
  • To formally close the subscription with the estate, contact JD Sports on 0161 393 7055 or via the contact form, and notify them that the account holder has died
  • A prorated refund for the unused portion of the subscription may be available; JD Sports’ terms indicate refunds for the unused proportion where the subscription is cancelled for reasons beyond the subscriber’s control. (Source: JDX Unlimited Terms and Conditions, last verified May 2026.)

Because the subscription is now closed to renewals, there is no risk of an accidental auto-renewal. However, closing the JD Sports account will terminate any remaining subscription access.

BNPL: Klarna and Clearpay at JD Sports

JD Sports offers both Klarna and Clearpay as buy-now-pay-later (BNPL) payment options at checkout. Either service may have been used by the deceased for recent purchases.

Why this matters for the estate: BNPL balances do not disappear when someone dies. Outstanding instalments are debts of the estate and must be handled through the estate administration process, in the same way as any other unsecured debt. The provider must be notified promptly – some BNPL lenders will freeze interest and charges during estate administration if notified early. Failure to notify can result in the debt growing with late fees.

Klarna offers Pay in 3 (three equal instalments over six weeks) and Pay in 30 days at JD Sports. If the deceased used Klarna, check their email for any Klarna payment schedules that remain active. Klarna has a dedicated UK bereavement process – see our guide to notifying Klarna when someone dies for the specific steps, phone number, and documents needed.

Clearpay splits purchases into four equal fortnightly payments. Like Klarna, outstanding Clearpay instalments are estate liabilities. The Financial Services and Markets Act 2023 has legislated to bring BNPL providers including Clearpay into full FCA regulation; once implementation regulations come into force, Clearpay will be required to follow FCA guidelines on fair treatment of bereaved customers and estates. In the meantime, contact Clearpay directly to notify them of the death and request that the account be frozen.

How to identify whether BNPL was used: Check the deceased’s email inbox for payment confirmations from Klarna or Clearpay. Check bank statements for outgoing payments labelled KLARNA or CLEARPAY. If you log into the JD Sports account before closing it, the order history will show which payment method was used for each transaction.

Gift cards

JD Sports gift cards and eGift cards are bearer instruments – they function like cash and can be used by whoever holds them, with no need to register them to a name. This has two practical implications for the estate:

  1. A gift card found among the deceased’s possessions is an asset of the estate and can be used without any formal claim through customer service
  2. The balance does not expire automatically when the account holder dies

Expiry terms: Both physical gift cards and eGift cards expire 24 months from the date of purchase. If a purchase is made using the card, the 24-month clock resets from that transaction. Any remaining balance after the expiry date is cancelled with no refund. If you find gift cards or eGift card codes in the deceased’s belongings, check when they were purchased – cards approaching the two-year mark should be prioritised in the estate’s administration. (Source: JD Sports – eGift Card Terms and Conditions, last verified May 2026.)

Balance check: Use the online balance checker at jdsports.co.uk/gift-cards/ or call 0161 393 7055.

Cash exchange: Gift cards cannot be exchanged for cash. Returns made against a purchase originally paid with a gift card will result in the refund being issued to a replacement gift card, not as cash.

Note: JD Sports eGift cards cannot be used in combination with Klarna, Clearpay, or PayPal Credit at checkout. If the deceased made a return on an order that mixed payment methods, this may affect how the refund is processed – contact JD Sports to confirm.

Things to watch out for

The group brand problem is easy to underestimate. Most families think of “JD” as one company. It is not – it is a group with multiple separate retail brands. If the deceased was an active outdoor enthusiast, they may have had a Go Outdoors account, a Blacks account, and a JD Sports account, all held separately. Check email inboxes and bank statements for purchase confirmation emails from Size?, Footpatrol, Blacks, Millets, and Go Outdoors before assuming the JD Sports notification covers everything.

JD Sports is not Sports Direct. This is worth repeating because it causes real confusion. Many people associate both brands with budget sports retail and assume they are connected. They are not. If the deceased shopped at both, you must contact each company independently. See our Sports Direct guide for the Frasers Group notification process.

JD Cash has no monetary value and cannot be claimed. Some families spend time trying to recover loyalty points as a cash equivalent. JD Cash cannot be exchanged for cash under any circumstances; it is not an estate asset. Close the account and move on.

Check for BNPL before closing the account. Once the JD Sports account is closed, it becomes harder to retrieve the order history and confirm which payment methods were used. Before requesting account closure, log in and review recent orders – note any that were paid through Klarna or Clearpay so you can notify those providers separately.

Go Outdoors Discovery Card. If the deceased held a Go Outdoors Discovery Card (the store’s discount club membership), this is a separate account that must be cancelled directly with Go Outdoors. It does not form part of the JD Sports account.

JDX Unlimited is closed to renewals – there is no risk of an accidental auto-renewal for the deceased’s subscription. But if the subscription was active and a prorated refund is possible, it is worth asking when you make the general account closure call.

Summary

JD Sports has no dedicated bereavement service. Contact general customer service on 0161 393 7055 (Mon–Fri 08:00–19:00, Sat–Sun 09:00–18:00) to close the account and deal with any outstanding orders. Notify each JD Group brand separately – Size?, Footpatrol, Blacks, Millets, Go Outdoors, and Tiso each have their own accounts and processes. Handle any outstanding Klarna or Clearpay balances as estate debts, and use or inventory any gift cards before their 24-month expiry. JD Sports and Sports Direct are separate companies with no shared processes.
