About the standard fee shown: The figure listed under "Standard" is the standard weekday attended cremation fee – typically the peak daytime slot. Many crematoriums also offer lower-cost attended slots at early morning times or quieter weekday hours. Contact the crematorium directly to ask about all available time slots and their prices – it could make a meaningful difference to the overall cost.

Why cremation fees vary so much
Cremation fees in the UK range from under £100 to over £6,000 – a difference that surprises most families. The variation comes down to three main factors: who operates the crematorium (local council or private company), where it's located, and what the fee structure includes.
Council-run crematoriums tend to charge lower fees and structure them differently from private operators. A council fee might cover only the use of the chapel and cremator, while a private operator may bundle additional services into their headline price. Neither approach is better or worse – but it means comparing headline figures directly can mislead.
The standard cremation fee covers an attended funeral with use of the chapel, a set duration (usually 45 to 60 minutes), and the cremation itself. The direct cremation fee covers the cremation without a chapel service – lower cost, but no opportunity for family to attend at the crematorium.
What this tool covers
This dataset covers 237 crematoriums across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. For each one, we've sourced the standard cremation fee and, where published, the direct cremation fee – taken directly from the crematorium's own fee schedule or council published rates.
Fees shown are the crematorium fee only. They do not include funeral director fees, doctor's certificates, or any other disbursements. For a fuller picture of what a funeral costs, see our funeral planning guide and our guide to direct cremation.
Standard cremation fees across the 237 crematoriums in this dataset range from £453 to £1,475. The spread reflects the full range from low-cost council facilities to high-end private crematoriums in city centres.
Using this data to make decisions
Crematorium fees are only one part of funeral costs, but they're the one families have the least visibility on. Unlike funeral directors, crematoriums rarely advertise fees prominently – which means most families accept whatever their funeral director proposes without knowing whether alternatives exist.
You are not obliged to use the crematorium your funeral director defaults to. If a lower-cost facility is within reasonable distance, you can ask your funeral director to use it instead – many will accommodate this without additional charge.
If you have questions about specific fees or what's included, contact the crematorium directly. Details for each crematorium are on their individual pages, linked from the results above.
