Direct cremation in St Helens: from £995
A direct cremation is a cremation with no service and no mourners present. The funeral director collects the person who has died, arranges the cremation at a time set by the crematorium, and returns the ashes to you. You can hold a memorial separately, whenever and wherever you want.
The crematorium charges its own fee on top of the funeral director’s charges, £890 locally. Some firms include it in the price below and some add it, so check which applies before you compare two figures.
No published prices: Co-op Funeralcare, F W Marsh Funeral Service.
St Helens Partnership Funeral Service
A fixed-price funeral scheme open to any resident of St Helens Borough whose funeral is a cremation at St Helens Crematorium or a burial at St Helens or Newton-le-Willows Council Cemeteries. It is not means-tested. Five named partner funeral directors deliver it, and each publishes its own price for the same options, so the scheme is a price comparison rather than a single figure.
Price varies by provider – the council publishes a comparison table instead of one fixed figure. At the standard 10am-4pm crematorium slot: Bate & Holland £2,570, Co-op Funeralcare £2,384, Debbie Bennett £2,729, F W Marsh £2,946, Walkers £2,250. All five include collection, chapel of rest, arrangements, coffin, motor hearse plus one limousine, the crematorium or cemetery charge, the medical referee fee, and a clergy or officiant fee. Four of the five also offer direct cremation with no ceremony under the scheme: Bate & Holland £1,150, Debbie Bennett £1,120, F W Marsh £1,075, Walkers £1,050 – Co-op Funeralcare does not offer this option under the partnership.
Delivered by Bate & Holland Funeral Directors and Co-op Funeralcare and Debbie Bennett Funeral Directors and F W Marsh Funeral Service and Walkers Funeral Service, listed below.

Direct cremation (unattended)
£995
This firm's own prices page does not follow the three-figure format the Competition and Markets Authority requires. 'Direct Cremation' at £995 plus crematorium fees is the closest match to an unattended cremation, so that is where it is shown. Unattended burial and local fees are not itemised. AJW markets itself as a member of the Independent Funeral Directors College.
Independent. Its two St Helens Borough premises (Sutton, Haydock) were checked against Frank Dooley & Son's separate Haydock premises to rule out a duplicate; the postcodes are confirmed distinct (WA11 0SG vs WA11 0SY).

Unattended burial

Local burial fee (paid to the council)
£895
Standardised price list on the firm's own site. Local cremation fee is not separately itemised in this document – the £1,200 direct cremation figure combines the firm's own charges and the cremation fee. The £895 local burial fee shown is the figure on the firm's own price list; the council's current resident interment fee is £931, so this £895 appears to be an earlier figure not yet updated on the firm's site. Bate & Holland is also a named St Helens Partnership Funeral Service provider (see the council scheme above); those partnership prices are scheme-specific and separate from this general price list: £2,570 for a 10am-4pm cremation, £1,150 for direct cremation with no ceremony.
Chain, two branches in the Borough (St Helens town centre, Newton-le-Willows). Named St Helens Partnership Funeral Service provider. Its own standardised price list page is not shown (see below).

Standardised price list published on the firm's own site. The firm publishes its local burial fee as a range of £753-£1,710 and its local cremation fee as a range of £664-£871, because the deceased may be kept at the business's Prescot, Rainhill or Bootle branches, spanning multiple council areas, so there is no single figure to show. Debbie Bennett is also a named St Helens Partnership Funeral Service provider: £2,729 for a 10am-4pm cremation, £1,120 for direct cremation with no ceremony.

No standardised price list page or PDF appears on this firm's own site. The council's Partnership Funeral Service PDF gives scheme-specific figures only (£2,946 for a 10am-4pm cremation, £1,075 for direct cremation with no ceremony) – these are not carried into the general price fields, since they are scheme prices, not the firm's own published price list. Marketing language seen elsewhere advertises funerals 'starting from £1,800', but no price list is published behind it. Ask the firm directly for its general price list.

This firm's own prices page is not published in the three-figure format the Competition and Markets Authority requires. It instead lists three named packages: Direct Cremation £881, Standardised Funeral £1,500, Options Funeral from £2,060, all plus disbursements. Local disbursement fees are itemised precisely: St Helens Crematorium fee 2025/26 £890, 9am/9.30am slot £639, direct cremation fee £389; St Helens Council resident interment fee 2025/26 £895, grave purchase fee (one or two interments) £1,059. This £895 figure is the 2025/26 fee from the firm's own price list; the council's current fee is £931. Walkers is also a named St Helens Partnership Funeral Service provider, and publishes the lowest price of the five partnership providers: £2,250 for a 10am-4pm cremation, £1,050 for direct cremation with no ceremony.

Council fees in St Helens
The crematorium or burial fee is set by the council, not the funeral director, and is paid on top of the prices above.
Every price here comes from the firm’s own published price list or the council’s own published fees, with a link to the source and the date it was last verified. Where a firm publishes no price, we say so instead of estimating. No listing is paid for and none can be bought.
