Wigan Council’s published fee schedule does not include a separate family-chosen direct or unattended cremation fee. The £338 “public cremation” fee is for a public health funeral arranged by the local authority where there is no next of kin able or willing to make arrangements – it is not an option families can select in place of a standard service. Anyone wanting an unattended, no-service cremation at Wigan should ask a funeral director directly what can be arranged, as this is not itemised on the council’s own price list.

What happens during the service
The coffin is brought into the chapel in procession, accompanied by whatever music the family has chosen, and placed on the catafalque – the raised wooden frame it rests on during the service. The chapel has a plasma screen that families can use to show photos of the person who has died, either throughout the service or during a moment of reflection. At the committal, the coffin can either be lowered from view or left in place, whichever the family prefers.
Cremations are normally carried out within 24 hours of the service, and on the same day if the family specifically asks for this. Where a same-day cremation isn’t possible, the crematorium has hygienic chilled storage on site. Ashes are usually ready for collection within 24 hours, or the next working day, and are released with a Certificate of Cremation.

Parking and opening hours
The crematorium office is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 4.30pm. There’s free on-site parking, including a small number of disabled bays close to the entrance. Paths around the grounds are level and clear, with seating available for anyone who needs to rest.

Wigan Crematorium is on Cemetery Road, off Warrington Road, in Lower Ince. It’s operated by Wigan Council and opened in 1955. The council has invested over £750,000 in the site to keep pace with demand, with cremation now accounting for the large majority of funerals nationally.
