Chapels and facilities
Southend Crematorium has two chapels. The West Chapel seats around 100 and is the larger of the two; the South Chapel seats around 44. Both are wheelchair accessible, multi-denominational, and can be arranged for non-Christian and secular services, with religious symbols displayed or removed as the family prefers. A separate church on site, used for Christian denomination services, seats around 40.
Both chapels have an Obitus music system, with a pipe organ in the West Chapel and an electronic organ in the South Chapel. The Obitus system also handles the £96 live and on-demand webcast, and can record services onto CD or DVD. There are two small waiting rooms, one with refreshments available, and wheelchair-accessible toilets reached through the memorial chapel.

Memorial gardens and ashes
The Garden of Remembrance covers eight acres and includes formal gardens, a sunken rose garden and rock gardens, with roses, trees and shrubs dedicated in memory of loved ones. A newer Pergola Walk incorporates the site’s existing slate memorial tablets alongside new memorial designs. There is also a separate Woodland Memorial Garden, densely planted with native trees, hollies, dog roses and ferns around a small stream and rock pool, with a wooden pavilion for shelter.
Families can choose to take cremated remains away, have them interred in a cremated remains plot in the cemetery (with an approved stone memorial afterwards), or scattered in the Garden of Remembrance. Any instruction on final resting place must be authorised by whoever signs the cremation paperwork.

About this crematorium
Southend Crematorium opened in 1953 and is council-run rather than privately operated. Families who want a simple send-off without a full memorial service have two lower-cost routes: the committal-only option with mourners present (£880), or a fully unattended direct cremation (£325) with the ashes returned or scattered afterwards.
