The grounds and chapel
Peterborough Crematorium opened in 1958 and sits on around 26 acres, much of it left as original ancient woodland – the council notes carpets of bluebells and other wild flowers in spring, along with a variety of birds and animals on site. The non-denominational chapel seats approximately 80 people, with additional standing room at the rear, and can host any recognised religious or civil form of service. Service types and timing
The council offers four service types: a 30-minute reduced service, a 1-hour standard service, direct cremation (unattended), and attended direct cremation, where a small number of mourners can pay their respects within a 15-minute slot including entering and leaving the chapel. For large congregations or services with personal tributes, readings or a horse-drawn hearse, the council recommends the 1-hour slot rather than the 30-minute one. A “state of the art” digital music system searches an extensive Obitus catalogue, and the crematorium offers service recording on USB, DVD, or as a live webcast so people who can’t attend can still watch.
