About this crematorium

Mountsett Crematorium opened in August 1966, on the outskirts of Dipton, County Durham, in a woodland setting with views across the surrounding valley. The building was designed by Charlton and Crowther of Bond Street, Leeds, and is operated by a joint committee on behalf of Durham County Council and Gateshead Council.

The chapel seats 120, with standing room for a further 100 and additional foyer screens for overflow viewing. It’s equipped with the Wesley music and media system, dual 48-inch screens for photographs or video tributes, an organ, and an induction loop system for hard-of-hearing mourners. Services can be webcast live or recorded to CD, DVD or USB for family who can’t attend in person.

Visitor facilities include accessible toilets at the entrance and exit, and a waiting room with a water dispenser. The grounds are dog-friendly, provided dogs are kept on a lead.
