Mortlake Crematorium does not offer direct (unattended) cremation. The Board publishes its reasoning on its own site: every person who dies is brought through the chapel for their cremation, and the standard fee applies whether or not family and friends choose to attend the service.

Chapel and facilities
The chapel seats 94 people downstairs and a further 36 in the gallery, with standing room in the entrance hall for larger funerals. The gallery houses the crematorium’s original 1939 Compton pipe organ, still used for services. Two 49-inch portrait screens display photographs and tributes through the Obitus (Maestro) media system, and services can be webcast live or recorded to DVD, Blu-ray or USB.
Step-free access, an induction loop, accessible toilets and dedicated disabled parking by the main building support mourners with mobility or hearing needs, and there is a covered portico for drop-offs. Plentiful on-site parking overlooks the River Thames, with overflow space for larger services.
Standard weekday services run at 40-minute intervals from 10am to 4.40pm, Monday to Friday, with early 9am and 9.30am slots (30 minutes, reduced fee). A double-length 80-minute slot is available and recommended for services with 75 or more guests or multiple tributes. Weekend services can be arranged subject to staff availability; there are no services on bank holidays.

Grounds and remembrance
The grounds include a water garden with waterlilies, rose beds, a dovecote, memorial courts and a wisteria arch, all overlooking the River Thames. A remembrance room holds illuminated, handwritten Books of Remembrance, and the crematorium offers niches and scattering areas for ashes alongside its formal memorial gardens.

About this crematorium
Mortlake Crematorium is operated by the Mortlake Crematorium Board, now made up of 12 members drawn from Ealing, Hammersmith & Fulham, Hounslow and Richmond upon Thames. It opened in January 1939, established as a joint venture by the boroughs of Hammersmith, Richmond, Barnes and Acton under the Mortlake Crematorium Act 1936 – the first crematorium in the country licensed under its own dedicated Act of Parliament. Designed by Douglas Barton of Hammersmith Metropolitan Borough Council and built over three years at a cost of £27,000, it was opened by Lord Horder, physician to the King. The chapel building was formally listed Grade II by English Heritage on 6 May 2011, cited for its Art Deco design, arcaded cloisters and largely unaltered interior.
