Canley Crematorium, Coventry: fees and services
Canley Crematorium has two chapels – Charter Chapel and Cannon Hill Chapel – and the fee is the same whichever one your service is booked into. Canley is run directly by Coventry City Council, so its fees come from the council’s own published price list rather than a national average. The figures below are Coventry City Council’s current charges, verified against coventry.gov.uk on 2 July 2026.

Coventry City Council charges £746 for a child cremation up front, the same fee shown in the table above. If the child was under 18 (or stillborn after 24 weeks of pregnancy) and was a Coventry resident, this £746 is refunded in full through the Government’s Children’s Funeral Fund – the family pays the crematorium and the fund reimburses it, rather than the fee being waived at the time of booking. Non-resident families, and cases involving a pregnancy loss before 24 weeks, do not qualify for the refund.

Chapels and facilities
Canley has two chapels – Charter Chapel and Cannon Hill Chapel – each with its own driveway and car park, named after the road used to reach them. Every booking, in either chapel, has a 45-minute time slot. Both chapels have a specialised music system, or families can arrange their own organist for the service. History
Discussions about building a crematorium for Coventry began as early as 1934. The Ministry of Health approved both a crematorium and an accompanying cemetery on 29 April 1938, and construction started in late spring 1939 – but wartime shortages of materials and labour delayed the project for several years. The air raids of 14–15 November 1940 added urgency to finishing the works.
Canley Garden Cemetery and Crematorium was formally opened on Tuesday 23 February 1943 by Alderman Emily Smith, JP, the Mayor of Coventry. The first cremation took place on 26 February 1943 and the first burial a month later, on 27 March 1943.
The original building was modernised in the early 1990s with the addition of a second chapel: construction of Cannon Hill Chapel began on 29 June 1992 and completed on 12 May 1993, giving the site the two-chapel layout it still has today.
