About this crematorium

Birtley Crematorium sits within the grounds of Birtley Cemetery on Windsor Road, Birtley, and has been operated by Gateshead Council since it opened in 1957. A council committee report on the crematorium’s cremator replacement programme confirms the 1957 opening date and records that by 2017 the site was handling over 500 cremations a year, alongside Gateshead’s other crematorium at Saltwell.

The chapel welcomes funeral services of all denominations and sects. A cross on the chapel wall can be covered on request for those who prefer a non-religious or different-faith service. The chapel has wheelchair access and a hearing loop system for hard-of-hearing mourners.

A landscaped Garden of Remembrance provides a private space for reflection, with commemorative plaques along its borders. Gateshead Council also maintains a book of remembrance for Birtley, including a digital version that can be accessed at any time, in addition to a physical book of remembrance room on site.

Parking within the crematorium grounds is limited. When the on-site car park is full, staff direct mourners to park on Windsor Road outside the crematorium.
