About Winchester’s cemeteries
Magdalen Hill Cemetery is the principal burial ground, located on Alresford Road east of the city centre. Built on a hillside with chalky, porous soil, it is prone to gradual grave settlement and headstone movement – the council offers a paid grave-tidying and top-up service for graves over five years old (£60 including VAT). West Hill Cemetery is a Victorian burial ground in the heart of Winchester, adjacent to the old city walls. Simple graves (unpurchased, dug to single depth only) are available but carry no ERB grant and permit only a plaque.
