North Lanarkshire Council is one of Scotland’s most populous local authorities, covering Motherwell, Coatbridge, Airdrie, Cumbernauld, and surrounding communities to the north-east of Glasgow. Non-resident fees apply only when an interment takes place in a new lair. Fees are for 2026/27.
New burial rights are no longer permanent
From 1 March 2026, any new lair purchased in a North Lanarkshire cemetery grants the lair holder a right to burial for a fixed 25-year period, rather than lasting forever as older lairs did. At the end of the 25 years, the lair holder (or their successor) can apply to extend the right for a further 10 years, and there is no limit on how many times a 10-year extension can be requested. Lairs bought before 1 March 2026 keep their existing, unaffected burial rights. If you’re purchasing a new lair, factor in that you or your family will eventually need to renew the right of burial rather than owning the plot outright.
