How to notify Revolut when someone dies

Last updated 20 April 2026

When someone dies and they held a Revolut account, you need to act reasonably promptly. Revolut accounts can hold funds across multiple currencies, and any paid subscription – Metal, Premium, or Ultra – will continue billing until cancelled. This guide explains exactly how to notify Revolut, what documents they require, what their £5,000 probate threshold means in practice, and what to expect at each stage of the process.

How to notify Revolut of a death

Revolut handles all bereavement notifications by email. There is no dedicated phone line for bereavement cases, and no branches to visit. The single point of contact is:

bereavement@revolut.com

Send an email including:

  • The deceased’s full legal name
  • Their date of birth
  • The phone number and email address linked to their Revolut account
  • Your full name, email address, and your relationship to the deceased

You do not need to have all your documents ready before you make contact. Send the initial email with what you have, and Revolut’s bereavement team will confirm what they need next.

Once Revolut receives your notification, they will suspend all activity on the account as soon as possible – outgoing payments stop, cards are blocked, and no marketing communications will be sent. You will then receive further instructions from the team about submitting documents and releasing the account balance to the estate.

No phone line – what that means in practice

For families accustomed to dealing with traditional banks by phone, email-only contact can feel less reassuring. In practice, it is straightforward – Revolut’s team handles bereavement cases regularly and the email channel is their standard process. If you are dealing with multiple organisations simultaneously, email has the advantage of creating a clear written record. Keep copies of everything you send and receive.

If the deceased was a Revolut customer themselves and you happen to have access to their app, you can also reach Revolut’s general support via in-app chat – but the bereavement team works through the email address above, and that is where documents should be sent.

What documents you will need

Revolut’s document requirements depend on the balance in the account. You do not need everything in place before making first contact – send the initial email, and the bereavement team will confirm the full list.

Proof of death (one of the following):

  • Death certificate – a high-quality copy, where all four corners are visible; Revolut cannot accept scans of copies
  • Interim death certificate (issued before the full certificate, often used when the coroner is involved)
  • Coroner’s certificate
  • If the death occurred outside the UK, an authorised translation of the foreign death certificate

Proof of your identity:

  • Your passport or government-issued photo ID
  • All four corners of the document must be visible in the image; Revolut specifies they cannot accept scans of photocopies

If the account balance is £5,000 or under:

  • Revolut’s indemnity form (in place of probate documents)
  • The bereavement team will provide this form once they have your initial notification

If the account balance exceeds £5,000:

  • Grant of probate – if the deceased left a valid will, the grant confirms the executor’s legal authority to deal with the estate
  • Letters of administration – if the deceased died without a will (intestate), this document gives the administrator equivalent authority

A note on certified copies. Unlike some banks, Revolut asks for high-quality copies rather than originals. That said, if you are dealing with several organisations at once, it is worth ordering certified copies of the death certificate from the register office when you register the death – these cost £11 each in England and Wales. See gov.uk/order-copy-birth-death-marriage-certificate.

What happens to the account

Once Revolut receives your notification, they will act on it as quickly as possible:

  • Suspend the account – all outgoing payments, direct debits, standing orders, and card transactions stop
  • Cancel paid services – any Revolut Metal, Premium, or Ultra subscription is terminated
  • Stop marketing communications – the deceased will no longer receive emails or notifications from Revolut
  • Block all cards – physical and virtual cards linked to the account are cancelled

After the account is suspended, the bereavement team will write to you explaining the next steps to settle the estate claim. Once they have received and verified all required documents, the balance is released to the estate – transferred to the account you specify. The funds go to the executor or administrator, who then distributes them according to the will or the rules of intestacy.

If the account held balances in multiple currencies – Revolut accounts can hold GBP, EUR, USD, and dozens of other currencies – the team will confirm how these are handled at the time. Currency exchange rates at the point of conversion may affect the total GBP value released.

The £5,000 probate threshold

Revolut’s threshold for requiring formal probate documents is £5,000. This is considerably lower than most high-street banks – Barclays, HSBC, and Lloyds all have thresholds of £50,000 – and lower than digital bank peers Monzo (£25,000) and Starling (£10,000).

If the balance is £5,000 or under: Revolut can release funds using their indemnity form. This bypasses the need for formal probate and is typically faster.

If the balance exceeds £5,000: You will need either a grant of probate (if there is a valid will) or letters of administration (if there is no will). These are legal documents issued by the Probate Registry.

Applying for probate is a formal legal process. You can apply directly through gov.uk/applying-for-probate, or use a solicitor or probate specialist. Probate typically takes 16 weeks from application, though complex estates can take longer. For more detail on what probate involves and when it is required, see our guide to probate.

If the deceased held small amounts across several Revolut currency pockets, check the total GBP equivalent carefully against the £5,000 threshold – the combined balance across all currencies is what counts, not each pocket individually.

Tell Us Once – does Revolut participate?

Tell Us Once is a free government service that notifies multiple government departments – HMRC, the DVLA, the Passport Office, and others – when you register a death with your local council. It covers government bodies only, not banks or financial institutions.

The Death Notification Service (deathnotificationservice.co.uk) is the banking equivalent: a free service that notifies participating banks and financial institutions in one step. It is operated by the banking industry.

Revolut does not participate in Tell Us Once, and does not appear on the Death Notification Service’s list of participating institutions. You will need to notify Revolut directly at bereavement@revolut.com. Similarly, third-party services such as Life Ledger are currently unable to notify Revolut on your behalf.

This is one of the practical differences between a digital bank and a traditional high-street bank. Revolut’s bereavement process is entirely self-contained – direct contact by email is the only route. If you are managing notifications across many organisations, keep a list of who has been contacted and what stage each is at. Our guide to notifying all companies after a death covers the full process across utilities, telecoms, government departments, and financial institutions.

How long does the process take?

Revolut aims to respond to your initial notification within 15 days. The full timeline depends on how quickly documents can be provided.

SituationTypical timeline
Initial notification acknowledgedWithin 15 days
Balance under £5,000 – indemnity form routeA few weeks once all documents submitted
Balance over £5,000 – probate requiredSeveral weeks after grant of probate received (probate itself typically takes 16 weeks)

The main delays in practice tend to be document-gathering – particularly waiting for the grant of probate if it is required. Notify Revolut early, even before you have all the paperwork. The account will be frozen once you contact them, and the team will wait for the documents to follow.

Common questions

What if the deceased had Revolut Metal, Premium, or Ultra?

Paid subscription plans are cancelled as part of the standard bereavement process. Once Revolut suspends the account, the subscription terminates and no further charges are made. You do not need to cancel the subscription separately – the bereavement team handles it. If a subscription payment was taken close to the date of death, mention this in your email and ask whether it can be refunded as part of the estate settlement.

What if the deceased used Revolut to hold foreign currencies or make international transfers?

Revolut accounts can hold balances across multiple currencies simultaneously. When the estate is settled, the bereavement team will confirm how each currency balance is handled. Funds in non-GBP currencies may be converted to GBP before release, or released in the original currency to an account that can receive it – clarify this with the team when you submit your documents. If the deceased held a Revolut account primarily for international transfers or travel spending, be aware that the combined balance across all currency wallets counts toward the £5,000 probate threshold.

What if the deceased had a Revolut <18 account in their child’s name?

Revolut’s under-18 accounts (previously called Revolut Junior) are linked to the parent or guardian’s main Revolut account. If the deceased was the lead parent or guardian, the under-18 account is tied to their account. Contact the bereavement team at bereavement@revolut.com and explain the situation – they will advise on what happens to the child’s account, which may need to be closed or transferred to another adult’s account. The child’s funds should be preserved and returned appropriately.

Is Revolut a fully regulated bank?

Yes. As of March 2026, Revolut Bank UK Ltd holds a full UK banking licence from the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA), with oversight from both the PRA and the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). The banking licence was originally granted in July 2024 (with restrictions during a mobilisation phase), and full authorisation without restrictions was granted in March 2026. This means Revolut UK customers are covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) up to £85,000.

If you are managing the estate of someone who banked with multiple digital banks, the processes are similar but the details differ – particularly the probate thresholds. See our guides to Monzo and Starling Bank for comparison. For a complete list of every company and institution you may need to notify, start with what to do after a death – all companies.
